Games/DLCs

The Binding of Isaac is an Indie game created by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl. It was released on the digital distribution platform Steam on September 28, 2011. The player controls a nude crying child named Isaac or one of five other unlockable characters (six as of the Wrath of the Lamb expansion). After his mother is given a message from God commanding her son be sacrificed as proof of her faith, Isaac flees into the horror-ridden basement to stay alive.

On November 1, 2011, it was included in the Humble Indie Bundle as part of the Humble Voxatron Debut.

The game's name and storyline reference the Biblical story known as the Binding of Isaac.

Gameplay

The Binding of Isaac is a two-dimensional Action-adventure game where the player controls Isaac or six of the unlockable characters as he traverses through the dungeons located underneath his mother's basement. The video game's gameplay and style are inspired by the dungeons of The Legend of Zelda series, while mixing in randomly procedurally generated floors akin to Roguelikes (like traditional roguelikes, death is permanent and the player is forced to restart with nothing if they die) while doing this is in a simple Legend of Zelda like formula. On each floor of the basement below, the player must fight off monsters before he can go into other rooms. Along the way, the player can collect currency to buy items from shops, keys to gain entry into special treasure rooms (as well as special golden chests, libraries that contain book items, and shops), and new weapons and power-ups to increase his chance of surviving. Each floor of the dungeon ends in a boss room, where the player must defeat the boss before being able to go down to the next floor.

Plot

The Binding of Isaac's storyline is based off the eponymous Bible story. Isaac (a kid) and his mother live in a small home situated on a hill, both peacefully keeping to themselves, with Isaac drawing doodles and playing with his toys while his mother watches Christian broadcasts on the television. Isaac's mother then hears "a voice from above", stating her son is corrupted with sin and must be saved. It asks her to remove all sin from Isaac to save him. She obliges, taking away his toys, pictures, his handheld video game console and even the clothes on his back.

The voice again calls out to Isaac's mother, stating Isaac must be isolated from all the evil in the world. Once again, she follows its command and locks Isaac in his room. Finally, the voice speaks to her again. It states she has done well but says it still questions her faith and commands she must sacrifice Isaac. She obliges, grabbing a kitchen knife and goes to Isaac's room. Isaac is watching through a sizable crack in his door and starts to panic. He finds a trapdoor under the rug, and just as his mother bursts in, he opens the trapdoor and jumps down it. Isaac then puts the paper he was drawing onto his wall, which transitions into the game's title screen.

Shown throughout the game at loading points between floors is Isaac recollecting about his childhood while curled up in a fetal position and crying. These purportedly show parts of his life, showing Isaac had a difficult childhood ranging from rejection from his mother to bullying from his classmates. However, some images show impossible scenes that cannot have happened but are rather Isaac's own fears. Along with that, the game resumes with Isaac waking up on the next floor making it possible that the memories are merely made up dreams.

The game has multiple ending scenes, making the storyline distorted and non-linear as the game continues.

Expansions

A DLC expansion was added to the game, titled Wrath of the Lamb, was released through the digital distribution platform Steam on May 28, 2012. The expansion adds 70% more content to the vanilla version, and contains +25 new bosses, +100 new items, +30 unlockable content, a new final ending and more.

A DLC expansion was added to Steam on May 2, 2015 titled Wrath of the Lamb: Eternal Edition, for free for all owners of the Wrath of the Lamb expansion. The expansion adds a new Hard Mode difficulty which contained Eternal Variants of bosses and monsters, as well as bug fixes and optimizations.

Steam Trading Cards

The Binding Of Isaac also has Steam Trading Cards. There are 9 cards, based on the first nine Tarot Cards in the game. These can be found in the player's Steam inventory after they have spent a certain amount of time playing up to a maximum limit of 5. Once the player hits the drop cap, they need to trade with other players to obtain the 4 remaining cards, or have a booster pack randomly drop, which contains more cards.

The artwork for the Steam Trading Cards was done by the Tumblr user Tikara, which can be seen on the Tarot Cards page.

Remake

Edmund McMillen has confirmed that a remake of the game (The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth) is slated for 2014 following the teaser trailer released in August 2013. He noted the primary purpose will be to take the game out of Flash and use a new engine to help limit the bugs with the game. It will include completely re-balanced items and monsters, as well as a new 16-bit style and music/sound (including remixes), a local co-op feature, and a new WotL sized DLC expansion along with console support. The following platforms have been confirmed: PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita. He stated he is looking to bring the game to iOS "if its not garbage."

Nintendo 3DS port

Edmund had tweeted that the game would receive a port on the Nintendo 3DS via the Nintendo eShop and was waiting for approval from Nintendo. Nintendo later rejected it, not based on the violence and dark setting, but rather the "questionable religious content".

The decision brought him to praise the Steam platform and the free reign it gave publishers regardless of the game's content (compared to Nintendo). Nintendo's rejection caused a public outcry among major gaming websites.

Relative to the remake of the game, Edmund has reached out to Nintendo to get the game released on the Nintendo 3DS. He stated the remake has a better chance with Nintendo now, due to the new 16-bit style as well as that the game had became a surprise hit. Some time later however, Edmund stated on his Formspring that there is virtually no chance for Rebirth to come out on the 3DS at this point, due to the religious content restrictions.

However, despite these previous events- Rebirth actually has been released for the New 3DS on the eShop, presumably due to Nicalis being an established and quite successful Nintendo eShop developer and publisher.

Reception

The Binding of Isaac received mostly favorable reviews from game critics and gamers alike. On the review aggregator GameRankings, the game has an average score of 85.17%, based on 18 reviews. On Metacritic, the game has an average of 84/100 based on 30 reviews.

In Germany, the game has received an age 16+ rating because of the potentially blasphemous content.

The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb is an official DLC expansion to The Binding of Isaac, which adds new Items, Rooms, Enemies, Bosses, and more. The DLC was released on Steam on May 28, 2012 and costs $2.99/£1.99/2.99€.

Challenges

The Candle
Wrath of the Lamb saw the addition of ten challenges. More details about each challenge and their unlockable items can be found on the Challenges page.

Achievements

Eternal God

47 achievements (originally 24) were added with the Wrath of the Lamb DLC. What they are and their unlock requirements can be found on the Achievements page.

Secrets

34 Secrets were added with the Wrath of the Lamb DLC. What they are and their unlock requirements can be found on the Secrets page.

Floors

The Cellar

The Cellar is an alternative version of The Basement which can randomly replace one or both Basement levels in a playthrough. The enemies differ from those appearing in the Basement, featuring an increase in the number of Spider-themed Enemies. Areas of webbing appear in the terrain which slow Isaac's movement and the speed of tears that pass through. The Cellar's enemies/bosses are arguably harder than that of the Basement's, making it a challenge for newer players.

The Catacombs

The Catacombs replaces The Caves in a similar fashion to how The Cellar can replace The Basement. The Catacombs contain tougher enemies than the Caves, such as Keepers and B. Lickers.

Necropolis

Necropolis is an alternative form of The Depths. It generally features harder versions of enemies from The Depths.

Utero

Identical in appearance to The Womb, Utero is identified by different enemies, such as Mask + Hearts and Angelic Babies, and different boss types.

The Cathedral

With Cathedral-styled walls, Cathedral is the polar opposite of Sheol and is the other option of floor to go after defeating It Lives. It features angel-based monsters (Holy Leech, Angelic Baby) and contains a New Final Boss.

The Chest

After you finish The Cathedral while holding the Polaroid there is a new floor that starts out with four Golden Chests in the spawn room that always spawn an item. Every room before the New Final Boss are rooms with two bosses (I.E. two Chubs, two Peeps, two different Horsemen of the Apocalypse.) Beating this floor with a specific character unlocks their respective item and a Final Ending Cutscene.

Rooms

Angel Room

Angel Room
See Angel Room for more detail.

An alternative to the Devil Room, with an Angelic figure (Presumably God) sitting there instead of Satan. Items do not cost hearts to pick up.

Curse Room

Costs 1 heart total (Half a heart walking in, half a heart walking out) to enter and exit. Has either one or two red chests or, rarely, an item from the Devil Room, Angel Room or Secret Room. The heart cost can be bypassed with flying upgrades so long as Isaac does not touch the spikes on the sides of the doorway. (This only applies on the way in, with the way back out always causing damage with or without flying upgrades.) If a secret room is next to the Curse room, a second spike door will be spawned allowing access between the two.

Sacrifice Room

Contains nothing but a single spike floor tile. Damaging yourself will spawn chests, both locked and unlocked, after walking on the spikes. Flight does not affect these spikes, and Isaac will still take damage. The amount of hits Isaac needs to take before spawning a chest is random. It is possible to use the Book of Shadows to spend no life but make the chest appear. There is also a very rare possibility for the Sacrifice Room to drop Devil Room items, such as Brimstone or The Nail.

Boss Challenge Room

A special Challenge Room that always contains a Boss Room item. This room can be identified from the normal Challenge Rooms by the additional skull at the top of the barred door and a bloody sword on the map. You must have only 1 red heart, 1 half red heart, or no red hearts to go inside (Not including Soul Hearts). These rooms are always opened for ???.

Library

Library2

Library in The Cellar.

This room can be identified from the Book icon on the minimap. The door itself looks identical to that of the Shop. This room gives you 2 books to choose from and requires a key to unlock the door. This room can spawn on every floor. It is also possible to have the same book spawn on both pedestals.

Super Secret Room

This room can be identified from the normal Secret Room by the unique tune that plays when it is opened and the darker icon on the map. It has something specific inside, which depends on the backdrop of the room.

Monsters

  • Spider - Small black spiders that skitter sporadically across the floor. Their movements are difficult to predict, sometimes moving random directions and distances while other times be-lining directly toward the player. If they have no direct line of sight to the player, they may stop moving and wait until line of sight is achieved.
  • Trite - Fast, hopping spiders similar to Hoppers, but capable of jumping much further and faster. Some of them replace where Hoppers would be. (Picture of the correct hopping spiders?)
  • Big Spider - Large black spiders that spawn two small spiders when killed.
  • Fat Fly - Pooter that has a body resembling a Boil which fires 2 blood shots at once.
  • Sack - White boil that spawns spiders.
  • Mulliboom - Mulligans with a bomb in their head. Unlike other Mulligans, they will chase instead of fleeing from you, and explode upon impact. (Current bug where they will start to close to you and you cannot get away in time)
  • B. Licker - Larry Jr.-like enemies that separate when one is killed.
  • Gurgle - Gaper that spits explosive shots at close range (like Sloth).
  • Gut - Green boil that spits explosive shots at close range.
  • Walking Boil - Mobile Boil.
  • Walking Sack - Mobile Sack.
  • Walking Gut - Mobile Gut.
  • I. Blob - Clotty that fires in all 8 directions.
  • Eternal Fly - White fly that turns into an attack fly when whatever it's circling is destroyed. Most commonly found circling around Poop, but is also found around certain enemies like (bomb) leeches and hangmen.
  • Holy Leech - White leech with guard fly - explosive (like those found in Sheol).
  • Angelic Baby - Skin-colored, winged Baby that spits a triple shot instead of a regular one. (Looks like a big, angry Guardian Angel)
  • Keeper - Bouncing Greed head. Fires in V pattern similar to SuperPooters. Will steal coins like Greed when player is hit. Amount of coins dropped/stolen from the Player is increased if an Avarice damages the Player in melee.
  • Double Vis - Vis that fires both directions. Has a gash in its back similar to the one on its front.
  • Slide - Blue Poky which stays on one place, but slides fast in a straight line towards Isaac, then returns to its starting position. Unlike regular Pokeys, they won't despawn when the room is cleared from other enemies until you exit and return to the room they were in. (Overall very similar to spike traps from The Legend of Zelda.)
  • Hanger - Flying shop owner on a noose with a guard fly. Fires a triple shot that will steal coins like Greed when the player is hit.
  • Mask + Heart - Big, flying masks that chase you like Knights but are invulnerable. Each mask spawns with a slowly flying heart that spits shots in a cross pattern when in range. A mask dies when its heart is destroyed.
  • Vomit Grimace - Similar to grey statues found in depths except shoots explosive green projectiles like Sloth. It is most commonly found in the Catacombs and Necropolis.
  • Swarmer - A mask surrounded by flies that spawns flies whenever hit. Also periodically spawns flies at random. When destroyed, leaves behind a number of random flies (Pooters, Attack Flies etc.)
  • Psychic Maw - A maw that fires homing tears with a guard fly.
  • Chubber - Fires a Lil Chubby who returns after being thrown. Deals 1 full heart of damage.
  • Mama Guts - Bounces, shooting in 8 directions. Splits into two guts when killed.

Obstacles

  • Cobweb - Slows down player as well as projectiles (Can be destroyed by Bombs)
  • Hellfireplace - An orange version of normal campfires mostly found in the cellar, but occasionally found in other places too. Shoots slow short-ranged projectile at the player.
  • Golden Poop - Similar to the poop obstacle, it is colored gold and drops at least 5 coins or a Trinket when destroyed.
  • Corny Poop - Poop with an Eternal Fly orbiting it. when the poop is destroyed, the fly will turn into a larger Attack fly, with increased health.

Bosses and Mini-Bosses

Wrath of the Lamb saw an addition of multiple bosses, many of which being alternates of existing bosses pre-DLC.

Devil Beggar

An alternative Beggar may occasionally spawn in the place of a normal Beggar. This beggar takes on a more demonic appearance (horns, black skin, red eyes) than his normal counterpart. This demon beggar does not accept money, instead exchanging hearts for items. The items it gives are Deal with the Devil items. Two spiders spawn when the Devil Beggar is blown up.

Curses

Curse of Darkness

Removes the map, replacing it with a black room with a question mark in the middle (same as a Secret Room) for the duration of the whole level.

Curse of the Labyrinth

Curse of the Labyrinth

Curse of the Labyrinth in Necropolis.

Makes the current level much larger, by creating more rooms to walk between. These levels, which are indicated by the suffix "XL" (ex: Catacombs XL), are effectively two stages combined into one, with two treasure rooms and two linked boss rooms.

  • If the Cellar/Basement is afflicted with this curse, both treasure rooms will be locked and will require a key.
  • If this curse happens on The Depths/Necropolis or The Womb/Utero, first boss rooms will play the same music that plays when fighting Mom or Mom's Heart respectively.
  • It is possible that Super Secret Room will not spawn in an XL level.

Curse of the Lost

Expands the current floor one size category higher (Basement/Cellar 1 would become the size of Caves/Catacombs 1, Caves/Catacombs 1 becomes Depths/Necropolis 1, etc.)

Trivia

  • The origin of the name is from the Book of Revelations, quote 6:16: "They called to the mountains and the rocks, 'Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the lamb!'".

The Binding of Isaac: Eternal Edition (also dubbed Eternal Update) is an official free DLC expansion to The Binding of Isaac, which adds a new Hard Mode, as well as fixing some long existing Bugs. The DLC was developed by Florian Himsl and released for free on Steam on May 05, 2015, for anyone who owns Wrath of the Lamb.

Hard Mode

The Main addition of the Eternal Update is the new Hard Mode. Every enemy and Boss has a chance to be replaced by an overpowered, whitecolored "eternal" champion alt. Every eternal enemy has a chance to drop an eternal heart and every eternal boss will drop an eternal heart. Additionally, several strong items like Brimstone and Epic Fetus are rarer, rerolling with the D6 has a chance to fail, picked up bombs have a chance to become troll bombs and much more.

Achievements

15 achievements related to hard mode were added, as well as one new title screen.

Rooms

One new room type was added for Hard Mode. In the Eternal Challenge Room, the player has to fight several waves of eternal enemies and bosses in order to get an item from the Angel Room Pool as well as a few eternal hearts. Additionally, it's impossible to teleport out of it.

Global changes

  • Hard mode added (shows a white pentagram on the bottom left corner of the screen in game)
  • The size of the health bar now scales with the number of heart containers up to 48 visible hearts.
  • The amount of Blue Flies you can keep after exiting a room has been increased from 5 to 10.
  • Shot speed up/down pills added.
  • You can no longer leave a room if there's a black fly in it (you can't exploit flies to reset a room or turn a slot machine into a fortune teller anymore).
  • Dying in a boss room after clearing it doesn't cause the boss to respawn anymore.
  • Killing Mom's Foot will now reward the player with Mom's Purse, unless the player is already in Posession of that item. This change was made, so players that wanted to pick up the Polaroid got to keep their trinket.
  • Wiggle Worm is more dynamic and allows the player to angle shots.
  • The Parasite got tweaked to no longer hit the same enemy twice with one shot.
  • Mask of Infamy now has a health bar.
  • Hoppers and Keepers got their movement speed increased and can now jump over obstacles.
  • Game Squid trinket added: Player has a 1/10 chance to fire a slowing tear.
  • Eternal Flies now stay white when their host is destroyed.
  • The Habit now gives the amount of charges you'd get for clearing a room instead of a flat 3 per hit.
  • New room patterns added.
  • Item pools changed (some items aren't Special Items anymore, while others are now)
  • The Crystal Ball now removes any active Curse of Darkness when used.
  • New enemy added: a ball of flies that looks like a double Moter.
  • Mom's Contact now also reduces shot speed.
  • The Mask+Heart monster's health has been reduced
  • Magic 8 Ball now also shows the location of the Boss Room on the map.
  • Basement/Cellar XL item rooms have a chance not to be locked.
  • Using the Joker card can fail to send the player in the Devil Room and instead teleport the player in a random room or do nothing at all (only happens in Sheol, the Cathedral and the Chest).
  • The Candle cannot hit offscreen enemies anymore (like the doors in Mom's fight).
  • Teleport! now has a chance to send the player to the I AM ERROR room.
  • Explosive Diarrhea! pills readded (readded in v.1.50 which was exclusive to the Most Unholy Edition and not available for purchase through steam)
  • Rusted Key functions again.
  • 15 new achievements/secrets added
  • New title screen (Eternal God) added that appears after getting all Eternal Edition secrets.

Hard Mode only changes:

  • New eternal champion version of bosses and enemies added: they have new attacks, increased health and can drop Eternal Hearts.
  • Eternal Challenge Room added where you can fight several eternal enemies and bosses for an Angel Room item
  • Eternal transformation added, that gives you flight if you get 7 health upgrades from eternal hearts.
  • Rerolling an item with the D6 can fail and make the item disappear (based on luck).
  • Orbitals now disappear after a few hits, but reappear after leaving the room.
  • Bomb pickups can turn into troll bombs when touched (based on luck).
  • The chances of getting a reward after clearing a room are lower (based on luck).
  • The drop rates from champions are lower.
  • The player's damage is lower in hard mode.
  • The chances for a special item to appear have been tweaked.
  • Brimstone, Dr. Fetus and Epic Fetus appear less often.
  • Horsemen and some alt versions of bosses can be encountered even if you don't have the corresponding achievements unlocked.
  • Guppy's Paw now gives 2 Soul Hearts per Red Heart instead of 3.
  • The Sun card and the Full Health pill only heal you for a few red hearts instead of fully.
  • Full Health Pill is also renamed to "Full Health (?)"
  • Red Heart container cap increased to 16.

Development

Florian Himsl (Programmer of TBoI and WoTL) found a way to reopen the broken files of the original Binding of Isaac and after playing a lot of Binding of Isaac: Rebirth he got inspired to work on another update for the original game. On February 2, 2015 he posted a video on his and his friends Youtube-Channel Gamesquid, that he's working on the Update. Edmund Mcmillen, also posted that video later on his Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth Development Blog.

The Binding of Isaac DEMO (also titled as The Binding of Isaac the Demo!) is a demo of the original The Binding of Isaac game released in October 8, 2011 after the full game's release from last month on September.

It is playable in Newgrounds for free which can be played from here.

Satan is a large, muscular goat-like demon with few types of grey shading colors. He sports with such demonic features; including a pair of large, feathered wings, pupiless red eyes, long horns, a cross-shaped mark on the forehead, cloven hooves, and large fangs. He also wears a pair of torn brown pants.

In his second form, he seems to be incredibly huge with his bare legs only visible while stomping to attack Isaac. From the original game, his legs look fat and bulkier. However in Rebirth, his legs are that of a stereotypical goat.

As a statue, Satan look far less intimidating, sporting with short horns, black eyes, and his baggy brown pants looks perfectly not torn at all. His statue artwork from both games, however, his eyes are red.

Strategy

The Fallen

Upon entering the Boss Room, Satan will summon The Fallen to fight the player. He behaves exactly like The Fallen anywhere else. However, a pair of Kamikaze Leeches also appear with him in the beginning of the fight.

This phase ends when the Fallen is killed, and will proceed to Satan's 1st form even if the leeches have not been destroyed.

An easy way to dodge his blood salvos is just standing behind the Satan Statue in the middle of the room, as The Fallen cannot fire through it. Otherwise, just follow the same tactics you would usually use for the Fallen.

When planting a Bomb about 3 seconds after entering the boss room where the Fallen appears (in front of the Satan statue), it should blow up the Kamikaze Leech, greatly damaging the Fallen and taking about a quarter of his health.

1st Phase

Satan1 resize

1st form.

After defeating The Fallen, Satan comes out of the statue in the middle of the room and attacks the player. He has three attacks: firing two salvos of blood (first 5, then 4), firing a blood beam from his mouth (if his eyes are open before the attack), and firing a blood beam from each hand (if his eyes are closed before the attack). He only performs the latter two attacks if Isaac is standing directly in front of him.

One effective method of beating him is to stand on the very far left or very far right (occasionally switching if he gets too close) and dodging his projectiles while shooting at him. Focus more on dodging than where tears go (most will hit him). Note that while he is shooting his blood tears, he is incapable of firing his blood beams, so it's best to switch sides then.

Another tactic is simply to run in semi-circles around Satan, making sure not to stand still, while firing tears. This works best with a high Speed stat. Satan will continuously try to hit you (and ideally miss) with his blood bullets as you run around him.

2nd phase

Satanhoof

2nd form.

After draining the health of his first form, Satan will fly off screen. He attacks solely by stomping the ground in the same fashion as Mom. He will stomp continuously with two legs faster than Mom's foot. In addition, he respawns 2 Kamikaze Leeches. By dropping any extra bombs you have while he is stomping, you can do decent damage to him and possibly chain react with the Kamikaze Leeches.

Notes

  • Using The Bible during the fight against Satan will result in Isaac's instant death, unless he has The Wafer.
  • To get an early hit on Satan's second form, place a bomb as he starts to laugh during the transition from phase one to phase two. Wait for the shadow to appear, then move away. The explosion should damage Satan.

Bugs

  • In Satan's second form, if he is killed before he can stomp his feet 2 times, he will turn back into a statue, and it will be impossible to kill him.
    • This bug will not occur once Satan stomps his leg at least 3 times before being killed.
  • If Mom's Bra is used on Satan while his hoof is down, and he is then killed during the freeze effect, the Devil Statue will reappear and the player will be unable to do anything. Touching the Devil Statue will cause 1 heart of damage to Isaac. The same bug can also occur when using Mom's Contacts or Mom's Pad. Defeating the second phase of Satan with extremely high damage (one shooting the leg), will also cause this bug. Also, blood may continue to pour from the ceiling whenever the statue is touched. It is possible to overcome this bug and achieve a defeat of the boss by focusing a substantial amount of damage into the Statue which appears, eventually the encounter should end as normal.
  • If Isaac runs into the wall behind Satan's statue when he transforms into his 1st form, he will enter an invisible door into the Devil Room/Angel Room.

Trinkets

Name & Image Effect Info
???'s Soul
Shape675

Gives you a Familiar that looks like Brother Bobby and floats slowly around the room on a pattern similar to The Peeper, shooting long-range spectral homing tears that have high Shot Speed.

If you have other familiars, they will follow ???'s Soul instead of Isaac. This does not include Orbitals, Blue Flies, or stage 3/4 Meat Boy and the body created by The Pinking Shears.

This item is meant to be unlocked by completing The Chest with ???. However, due to a bug it is instead unlocked by completing The Chest with Eve.

Ace Of Spades
Aceofspades
Increases the chance of Tarot Cards or Suit Cards dropping after clearing a room, and the chance of finding Cards when opening a Chest.

Chance of finding a Card when clearing a room is increased by 10%.

Chance of finding a Card when opening a Chest is increased by 66%.

Bloody Penny
Bloodypenny
Gives a 50% chance to drop a Half Heart when money is collected.

Unlocked by completing Cathedral with Samson.

Hearts dropped through the use of this trinket will always be Half Hearts, and are not affected by items such as Mitre or being spawned in special rooms such as Cathedral Super Secret Rooms.

Effective trinket for Blood Donation Machine use, as the money dropped by the machine will often create a Half Heart, effectively making that use "free". This is even more pronounced with the IV Bag, since it is possible to create as many as four coin drops per Half Heart spent via the item.

Burnt Penny
Burntpenny
Gives a 50% chance to drop a bomb when money is collected.

Unlocked by completing the Large Marge challenge.

Bombs dropped through the use of this trinket will always be single Bomb pickups.

Cain's Eye
Shape677
When starting a floor, 25% chance to get the The Compass effect for the duration of a floor. Unlocked by completing The Chest with Cain.
Cancer
Cancer
Decreases Tears Delay by 2. The effective fire rate increase varies depending on Isaac's current Tears stat. The higher the Tears stat, the higher the percentage increase in fire rate from Cancer. See the Tears section on the stats page for detailed calculation.
Child's Heart
Childsheart
Increases the chance of a Heart dropping after clearing a room, and the chance of finding a Heart when opening a Chest.

Chance of finding a Heart when clearing a room is increased by 10%.

Chance of finding a Heart when opening a Chest is increased by 66%.

Hearts dropped due to this trinket are treated as normal heart drops: they have a small chance to appear as Soul Hearts or Eternal Hearts. Items such as Mitre or Mom's Pearl will affect this chance.

Counterfeit Penny
Counterfeitpenny
Gives a 50% chance of increasing the value of every coin pickup by one. Can only be found in Golden Poop. Unlocked by completing the Isaac Was Good Today challenge
Cursed Skull
Cursedskull

If Isaac has less than one full Red Heart after taking damage, he will be immediately teleported to the last cleared room he was in.

The Cursed Skull only counts Red Hearts, and does not count Soul Hearts or Eternal Hearts. Even if the triggering damage is absorbed by a Soul Heart or Eternal Heart, Isaac will still be teleported if he has half a Red Heart or less.

Due to the above, ??? will be teleported any time he takes damage while holding this trinket, as will any character who has reduced their heart count to zero via other means.

Synergies: + Scapular = Partial immortality, a 1 heart hit could still kill you. + Scapular + Wafer = Complete immortality.

Curved Horn
Curvedhorn

Increases Effective Damage by 2.

Unlocked by completing The Cathedral with Judas

Rather than increasing the Damage stat, the Curved Horn increases the Effective Damage of Isaac's tears. Because the Damage stat increases Effective Damage by smaller and smaller amounts with each increase, this makes the trinket considerably more valuable at higher levels of the Damage stat. See Damage on the stats pages for a detailed calculation.

Eve's Bird Foot
Shape678

5% chance to spawn a Dead Bird familiar for the current room each time an enemy dies.

This item is meant to be unlocked by completing The Chest with Eve. However, due to a bug it is instead unlocked by completing The Chest with ???.

Flat Penny
Flattenedpenny
Gives a 50% chance of spawning a Key upon collecting a penny. Keys dropped through use of this trinket are treated as normal Key drops, and have a small chance of being replaced by a Golden Key.

Works also with coins dropped by the player itself after being attacked by Keepers, Hangers or Greed.

Fish Head
Fishhead
Attack flies spawn every time Isaac gets hit. Unlocked by completing the Lord of the Flies challenge
Game Squid
Wikia
10% chance to fire a tear that slows enemies down.
Goat Hoof
Goathoof

Increases speed by 0.15. Can exceed normal upper bound on speed.

Isaac's Head
Shape672
Gives the player Isaac's severed head as a tear-firing familiar. Fires piercing tears.

Unlocked by completing The Chest with Isaac.

Tears fired by Isaac's head do the same amount of damage as those fired by Brother Bobby.

Isaac's Fork
Isaacsfork

Clearing rooms may heal Isaac by 1/2 of a heart (10% chance).

Judas' Tongue
Shape674
Items in the Devil Room only cost 1 heart. Soul heart trades still cost 3 Soul hearts. Only works if you have the trinket before revealing the Devil Room. Unlocked by completing The Chest with Judas.
The Left Hand
Shape679

Replaces all normal chests with Red Chests. Gold chests are affected as well.

Unlocked by defeating Ultra Pride.
Liberty Cap
Libertycaphirez
25% chance of giving Isaac a random passive effect from Mushrooms as well as its corresponding visual effect upon entering a room.

Bug v1.48: Can also randomly add The Compass effect.

Possible mushrooms: Mini Mushroom, Odd Mushroom (Large), Odd Mushroom (Thin).

When playing as ???, this Trinket will generate a spirit heart when you gain the health up effect from Odd Mushroom (large). This spirit heart does not disappear when you exit the room. This effect only applies once per playthrough.

Lucky Toe
Luckytoe

Increases the chance to get a drop after clearing a room. Although the Luck stat also influences this, it does not actually increase the Luck stat.

The increase in drop chance is applied before the effect of Guppy's Tail.

Unlocked by Completing the 7 Years Bad Luck challenge.

Increases the chance of a generic drop from clearing a room by roughly 10%, the same amount increased by the Lucky Foot item. If Isaac's Luck stat is not negative, this raises the chance of an item dropping from 86.6% to 96.3%.

If Isaac also has the Lucky Foot and his Luck stat is not negative, the chance for a drop is only increased by 2% instead. This raises the chance of an item dropping to 98.3%.

If Isaac has a negative Luck stat and the Lucky Toe with or without the Lucky Foot, there is a 100% chance that an item will drop after clearing a room.

Maggy's Faith
Shape673
Gives an eternal heart at the start of every floor. Unlocked by completing The Chest with Magdalene.
Match Stick
Matchstick
Increases the chance of Bombs dropping after clearing a room, and the chance of finding Bombs when opening a Chest.

Chance of finding a Bomb when clearing a room is increased by 10%

Chance of finding a Bomb when opening a Chest is increased by 66%.

Bombs dropped due to this trinket are treated as normal Bomb drops, and can appear as single pickups, double pickups, or even Troll Bombs.

A Missing Page
Amissingpage

5% chance to induce The Necronomicon's effect upon taking damage.

Mom's Pearl
Momspearl

Grants a secondary 10% chance of any non-specific Heart drop turning into a Soul Heart.

The secondary chance triggers whenever a non-specific Heart drops which does not become an Eternal Heart or Soul Heart. It is applied after Eve's secondary 6.25% chance, but before Mitre's secondary 50% chance.

By itself, Mom's Pearl raises the chance of a non-specific Heart dropping as a Soul Heart from 9.8% to 18.62%. Combined with Eve's bonus, the chance becomes 23.58%. Combined with Mitre, the chance is 58.31%. Combined with both Mitre and Eve's bonus for the highest possible bonus, the chance is raised to 60.79%.

Pinky Eye
Pinkyeye
10% chance to fire a poison tear. There's a possibility to fire poisonous bombs with Dr. Fetus.
The Polaroid
Thepolaroid

If Isaac survives damage with less than one red heart, he will receive a shield similar to the Book Of Shadows for 5 seconds. This effect ignores other heart types and thus always works for ???.

Holding The Polaroid while opening the big chest at the end of the Cathedral will allow you to continue to The Chest.

Unlocked by completing Cathedral six times. You may use the same characters for all six completions.

In 1.4 through 1.48 it is always dropped by Mom upon completion of The Depths 2.

Push Pin
Pushpinhirez
10% chance to fire a spectral and piercing tear.
Red Patch
Redpatch
20% chance to increase damage upon taking hit, as if Razor Blade was used. Isaac loses his skin for the duration of the room. If Isaac has flight, loses body as well (visual effect similar to Transcendence).
Rusted Key
Rustedkey

Improves the chance of Keys and Golden Chests dropping after clearing a room, and chance of finding a Key when opening a Chest.(see info)

This item has no effect from v1.48 to v1.666. (Source - Reddit)

Chance of finding a Key or a Golden Chest when clearing a room is increased by 5% for each.

Chance of finding a Key when opening a Chest is increased by 66%.

Safety Cap
Safetycap

Improves the chance of Pills dropping after clearing a room, and chance of finding a Pill when opening a Chest.

Chance of finding a Pill when clearing a room is increased by 10%.

Chance of finding a Pill when opening a Chest is increased by 66%.

Samson's Lock
Shape676

1/15 chance to increase damage by 0.5 for the current room each time an enemy dies.

Unlocked by completing The Chest with Samson.

Stacks with Bloody Lust, but chance to trigger is too low to be worthwhile.

The Tick
Tickhirez

Drain 15% health of each enemy with more than
60 HP (ie. most bosses).

Also restores one red heart of Isaac whenever he enters an uncleared boss room.

The Tick is stuck into Isaac's head and cannot be swapped out for another trinket.

Bosses like Larry Jr. / Fistula are made up of entities with less than 60 HP, so their HP are not leeched.

Might be disadvantageous when playing with Eve, as Whore of Babylon will deactivate when entering boss room due to restored health.

The player will be unable to access The Chest without the use of Mom's Purse, as the nature of this trinket makes it impossible to pick up The Polaroid.

Umbilical Cord
Umbilicalcord
When Isaac's health is brought to half a red heart, a Little Steve familiar spawns. Applies only to the room in which Isaac took damage. If Isaac moves to another room without regaining more than a half heart of health, the spawned familiar will still disappear.

If you already have a Little Steve, Brother Bobby will spawn instead.
